WKU Honors College Newsletter Wins National Award

October 13, 2009

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University’s Honors College student produced newsletter Areté has won its second national award.

The newsletter placed third in the student-published division in the National Collegiate Honors Council competition.

Areté
has been published since the spring of 2006 and has been eligible to compete nationally for the past two years. The newsletter placed first in 2007.

“This is quite a recognition, particularly given the short time that this newsletter has even been in existence,” Provost Barbara Burch said. “This award speaks volumes about the quality of the program and the students and staff.”

The newsletter’s staff will present “How to Put Together a Winning Newsletter” during the 2009 NCHC national conference Oct. 28-Nov. 1 in Washington, D.C.

“As faculty advisor for Areté, I am pleased that our publication earns national recognition for WKU and builds on our Honors College’s national reputation for excellence,” said Dr. Angela Jones, assistant professor in WKU’s Department of English.

The 2008-09 student staff for Areté are: Dana Adams, a visual studies major from Franklin; Kacy Albany, a music major from Edmonton; Kendrick Bryan, a social studies major from Elizabethtown; Tanner Curtis, a photojournalism major from Lexington; Bobby Deignan, an English major from Louisville; Sarah Hood, an international affairs major from Fayette, Ala.; Matt Jenkins, a middle grades education major from Berea; Katie Knecht, a news/editorial journalism major from Paducah; Kelly Lafferty, a photojournalism major from Shelbyville; Amanda Loviza, a news/editorial journalism major from Chesterfield, Va.; Sam Micallef, a mathematics and secondary education major from Lexington; Sara Moody, a social work major from Benton; Wesley Peden, a computer science major from Glasgow; Matt Vaughan, a political science major from Mexico, Mo.; Ria Wallace, a news/editorial journalism major from Shepherdsville; Mannie Webb, an agriculture major from Rockfield; Laurel Wilson, a news/editorial journalism major from Lexington.
