Green, Ky. - Tau Beta Pi, the premier engineering honor society, has approved a chapter for Western Kentucky University’s Department of Engineering.
WKU’s petition to have its WKU Engineering Honor Society become a chapter of Tau Beta Pi was approved Oct. 16 at the group’s 2009 convention in East Brunswick, N.J. WKU’s chapter will be official installed on Feb. 27, 2010.
Sean Hamlet, president of the WKU Engineering Honor Society and an electrical engineering student, and Dr. Shane Palmquist, faculty advisor and associate professor of civil engineering, attended the national convention.
Tau Beta Pi, the honor society for all engineering students recognized for their distinguished scholarship and exemplary character, has more than 450,000 members and 234 active chapters in the United States.
The petitioning process to become a chapter of Tau Beta Pi requires a minimum of four years to complete.
Organizing a local engineering honor society with members selected from the top fifth of the senior class and the top eighth of the junior class was the first step in the detailed process.
WKU’s engineering honor society has 13 student members majoring in civil, mechanical or electrical engineering with nine more candidates who will be inducted on Feb. 27.
In addition to chapter president Sean Hamlet of Bowling Green, other student members are: civil engineering majors Nathan Roberts of Whitesville, Sarah Bertke of Reynolds Station, Bryan Embry of Bowling Green, Ben Webster of Lexington; electrical engineering majors Matthew Lodmell of Versailles, Daniel Childress of Bee Spring, Dong-Jin Lee of Bowling Green, Jason Whitehouse of Utica, Andrew Ayre of Gallatin, Tenn.; mechanical engineering majors Jonathan Broomer of Bowling Green, Nicholas Harlow of Glasgow, Justin Haag of Louisville.
Candidates for membership are: electrical engineering majors Nathan Dick of Bowling Green, Josh Grace of Greenville, Bryan Everett of Bowling Green; mechanical engineering majors Amanda Huff of Morganfield, Kurt Woods of Lexington, Ben Chumley of Bowling Green, Aaron Vanover of Philpot, Jason Selby of Louisville, Matt Rice of Johnson City, Tenn.
