Theoretical Basis:

The “Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education”, by Arthur W. Chickering and Zelda Gamson 1 , is often used as a means to increase engagement and learning. The Discussion Leader assignment touches on six of the seven principles:

Good practice encourages student-faculty contact

Good practice encourages cooperation among students

Good practice encourages active learning

Good practice gives prompt feedback

Good practice communicates high expectations

Good practice respects diverse talents and ways of learning
